Artem Abakumov

Full Professor, Director of the Center for Energy Science and Technology
Center for Energy Science and Technology

Dr Abakumov’s research focuses on understanding the crystal and defect structure of inorganic solids and linking this knowledge to designing new materials and getting deeper insight into their functional properties. Areas of Artem’s interest include inorganic solid state chemistry, complex transition metal oxides, materials for metal-ion batteries and electrocatalysis, magnetic and ferroelectric materials, aperiodic structures, conventional and multidimensional crystallography, structure analysis using a combination of transmission electron microscopy, synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction.

Artem received his candidate of science degree from Moscow State University in 1997. Before assuming a position of Scientific Researcher at MSU in 1999, Artem spent two years in the Electron Microscopy for Materials Science (EMAT) laboratory, University of Antwerp, conducting his postdoctoral research. From 2004 to 2008 Artem was Deputy Chair of the Inorganic Chemistry Division of MSU Department of Chemistry. Before joining Skoltech, Artem worked at the EMAT laboratory for seven years as a research leader.

Artem has published more than 260 articles in peer-reviewed journals with overall citation index of >3700. His professional affiliations include, among others, membership in the European Microscopy Society and chairmanship of the Special Interest Group on Aperiodic Crystals of the European Crystallographic Association.

  • Advanced transmission electron microscopy (electron diffraction, electron crystallography, high resolution TEM and STEM imaging using aberration-corrected microscopes, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, electron energy loss spectroscopy), scanning electron microscopy.
  • X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, crystallography, modulated and composite crystals, analysis of magnetic structures.
  • Strongly correlated transition metal oxides, magnetically frustrated systems, local structure of materials, defects in solids.
  • Inorganic chemistry, synthesis of inorganic materials, solid state chemistry of oxide materials, oxide ceramics for high temperature electrochemistry applications, oxide materials for energy storage applications, cathode materials for metal-ion batteries.
