Soumik Adhikary (Born 23rd of November, 1990 in Kolkata, India) is an Indian theoretical physicist who works on the foundations of quantum information science and quantum computation. He completed his Bachelor of Science from the University of Calcutta (2012). He then moved to Indian Institute of Technology Delhi from where he completed his Master of Science (2014) and also his doctorate degree (2020) under the supervision of Prof. V. Ravishankar. He subsequently joined Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology in 2021 where he currently holds the position of Research scientist.
Adhikary, as a graduate student, worked on foundational aspects of interacting quantum systems. He developed a unifying framework for non-classical correlations from which several notions of non-classicality would emerge as special cases. Later he focused his research on the variational model of quantum computation. Working with machine learning experts he developed methods to minimise overheads during supervised learning on a quantum processor. Adhikary subsequently proposed a new training algorithm for supervised quantum classifiers. His current research explores the mathematical and physical underpinnings of the variational model of quantum computation. In particular he is interested in explaining the intersection between variational algorithms and tensor networks.
I study the theoretical aspects of variational quantum computing — an emerging area that combines machine learning and quantum computation. In particular I am currently developing the theory of tensor networks as a tool to understand variational algorithms.
