Andrey Kazak

Andrey Kazak has more than 10 years of research experience. He graduated with honors from the Lomonosov Moscow State University in 2005 where he also received his Candidate of Science degree in Physics and Mathematics in 2009. At the onset of his career Andrey conducted geophysical and geochemical monitoring of the Moscow River, developed and implemented methods and software applications for quality control and processing of ocean bottom seismic data gathered from the Barents and White Seas in Russia. He contributed to the development of the seismic theory, consulted and trained specialists of geophysical companies, and participated in research initiatives in the area of geophysical well logging at an oilfield service company.

Before joining Skoltech, Andrey worked as a Senior Research Scientist at Schlumberger Moscow Research center (SMR), where he led and actively participated in a number of research projects studying petrophysical characteristics of numerous complex hydrocarbon reservoirs, including shale oil (Bazhenov) and low-permeable (tight) gas-condensate deposits of West Siberia (Achimov), carbonates of East Siberia (Verkhnechon, Preobrazhen, Ust-Kut), unconsolidated heavy oil sands of Russia (Van-Yogan) and Middle East (Amal, Mukhaizna). Andrey gained extensive experience in the application of digital rock and fluid analysis to characterize real deposits and to evaluate critical factors for the digital petrophysics approach. He was also responsible for the analysis of technological needs of Russian oil and gas companies and development of partnership R&D programs.

Andrey authored a series of comprehensive R&D reports and published a number of papers in oil-and-gas journals. He is a member of professional societies including European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers, Society of Petroleum Engineers, and Society of Core Analysts. His research efforts led to several patents for gas-condensate mixture for core flooding tests, registration and comparison of X-ray micro-CT images, and correction of pressure transition artifact in mercury injection porosimetry. In research Andrey considers himself a practical idealist. Thorough examination of the data with further development of sophisticated but easy-to-use solutions of challenging issues — these are the drivers of Andrey’s interest and passion!
